The Census (2011) data showed a significant declining trend in the Child Sex Ratio (CSR) between 0-6 years with an all time low of 918. The issue of decline in the CSR is a major indicator of women disempowerment as it reflects both, pre-birth discrimination manifested through gender biased sex selection, and post birth discrimination against girls.

 

-  The sharp decline as pointed by Census 2011 data is a call for urgent action, as it highlights that the girl child is increasingly being excluded from life itself. Coordinated and convergent efforts are needed to ensure survival, protection and education of the girl child. In this background, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) Scheme was launched by the Hon’ble Prime Minister on 22nd January, 2015 in Panipat, Haryana to address the issue of decline in CSR and related issues of empowerment of girls and women over a life cycle continnum.

The objectives of this initiative are:

  1. Prevention of gender biased sex selective elimination.
  2. Ensuring survival and protection of the girl child.
  3. Ensuring education and participation of the girl child.

BBBP has been implemented in Serchhip district and Siaha district and requires constant monitoring and supervision with Deputy Commissioners of these two districts. Periodic video conferences, written and verbal communication to DC’s and GOI.

- There is a State Level Task Force under the chairmanship of the Chief Secretary of the State with representatives from line Departments.

- State Resource Centre for Women is the State Level Project Management Unit (PMU) for BBBP
